Appendix

Privacy-relevant Android permissions requested by our applicationCAMERA

Used for permissions that are associated with accessing camera or capturing images and/or videos from the device.

This permission allows this application to support three features related to phone camera:

1) Scan QR Code for establishing a wireless connection between two devices faster because this method can bypass the manual input of wireless password.

2) Capture and transfer photographic images from one device to another device as part of the Camera feature in a connected group.

3) Capture the user’s video as part of the CosVideo feature in order for them to publish user-generated content in own recommendation list within this application.

READ_CONTACTS

Used for permissions that allow an application to read the user’s contacts data. This permission allows the application to transfer telephone contacts as part of the Phone Replicate feature. The purpose is to retrieve the user’s contacts (e.g. phone number, contact name, email, etc) from an old phone and transfer over to and save on a new phone.

WRITE_CONTACTS

Used for permissions that allow an application to write the user’s contacts data. This permission allows the application to transfer telephone contacts as part of the Phone Replicate feature. The purpose is to write user’s contacts (e.g. phone number, contact name, email, etc), that are received from an old phone to the designated contacts storage on a new phone.

GET_ACCOUNTS

Used for permissions that allow access to the list of accounts in the Account Service. This permission allows the application to attempt retrieval of user names from social accounts. The purpose is to minimize confusion to the peer users as much as possible by assigning a meaningful and related user name to the device if the device owner chooses not to login and not to set own nickname in the application. Without this feature, the default user name will be the combination of the phone brand and phone model. For instance, users on all Samsung Galaxy S8 devices will have user names defined as Samsung Galaxy S8 which is likely to cause confusion when peer devices attempt to search for and make a connection to this device when multiple Galaxy S8 phones are nearby.

Microphone

Used for permissions that allow an application to record audio. This permission allows the application to record audio while the user records video as part of the CosVideo feature in order for the user to publish user generated content in own recommendation list within this application.

READ_PHONE_STATE

Used for permissions that allow read only access to phone state, including the phone number of the device, current cellular network information, the status of any ongoing calls, and a list of any PhoneAccounts registered on the device.

This permission allows the application to extract the phone number of the device so that the application could fill in the phone number field automatically when a user creates a login account via phone number. The purpose is to simplify the user’s experience by providing the necessary information to login automatically for them. Extracting the phone number depends on the privilege offered by the mobile operators since some mobile operators do not allow extraction of a phone number even with this permission is given by the user.

READ_CALL_LOG

Used for permissions that allow an application to read the user's call log.

This permission allows the application to transfer telephone call log as part of the Phone Replicate feature. The purpose is to retrieve user’s call log from an old phone and transfer over to and save on a new phone.

WRITE_CALL_LOG

Used for permissions that allow an application to write (but not read) the user's call log data. This permission allows the application to transfer telephone call log as part of the Phone Replicate feature. The purpose is to write user’s call log (e.g. phone number, contact name, calling time, etc), that are received from an old phone, to the designated call log storage on a new phone.

READ_SMS

Used for permissions that allow an application to read SMS messages. This permission allows the application to transfer SMS messages as part of the Phone Replicate feature. The purpose is to retrieve user’s SMS messages from an old phone and transfer over to and save on a new phone.

READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE

Used for permissions that allow an application to read from external storage. This permission allows the application to access any files on the external storage, e.g. SD card, as part of Zapya’s core feature of transferring files. The user can select files to be transferred and send over the wireless connection created by the application.

WRITE _EXTERNAL_STORAGE

Used for permissions that allow an application to write to external storage. This permission allows the application to access the external storage, e.g. SD card, as part of Zapya’s core feature of transferring files. The user can choose to save received files that are transferred over the wireless connection into internal storage or external storage. The user must select to save to external storage from in-app settings.
